Mumbai: The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a 33-year-old man in Mumbai’s Mahim area over suspected links with the banned terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). Investigators are examining his alleged online activities, social media posts and Telegram connections.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Hasan Abu Sarmad Akhtar, was arrested by the ATS’s Kalachowki unit near Mahim Metro Station following a tip-off about his suspected activities, according to reports.
Social Media Posts Under Investigation
According to the ATS, Akhtar worked as a Rapido rider and also sold perfumes. Investigators allege that he used social media platforms to circulate radical content, promote communal hostility and share messages against India.
Authorities reportedly recovered objectionable material from his mobile phone. Some posts allegedly attributed to accounts linked to the accused included calls supporting jihad and urging people to take up arms. Investigators are examining the content as part of the ongoing probe.
Telegram Group and Masood Azhar Audio Clips
The ATS is also investigating the accused’s alleged role in operating a Telegram group. According to the agency, audio speeches attributed to Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Maulana Masood Azhar, including material concerning the Babri Masjid, were allegedly shared in the group on June 1, 2026.
Investigators further allege that Akhtar was active in a Telegram channel named ‘IBN-e-Qasim’, which the agency suspects is linked to extremist propaganda.
Possible Pakistan Links Being Probed
The investigation is examining the accused’s online contacts and possible links with Pakistan-based individuals. Officials are analysing the seized digital material to establish the nature and extent of the alleged connections and determine whether others may have been involved.
The allegations against Akhtar have not been established in court. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are examining the digital evidence and communications linked to the case.
