Bhubaneswar(Odisha): A developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a powerful cyclonic storm and move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast, raising concerns over heavy rainfall and strong winds in southern Odisha.
According to the forecast cited in the report, the system may cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by the forenoon of October 28 as a very severe cyclonic storm. Wind speeds at landfall could reach 115–125 kmph, with gusts of up to 140 kmph.
Five Odisha Districts on Red Alert
Southern Odisha is likely to experience the strongest weather impact, particularly on October 28. Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri are among the districts identified as being at risk of extremely heavy rainfall.
Rainfall could exceed 200 mm in some locations, according to the forecast in the supplied report. Strong winds may also affect southern Odisha, with speeds of 60–70 kmph and higher gusts possible in the red-warning districts.
Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Expected Across Odisha
The impact may extend beyond southern Odisha. Coastal areas could begin experiencing changing weather conditions from October 26, with heavy to very heavy rainfall and gusty winds expected in several districts.
An orange warning has also been reported for several districts, including Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Boudh, Subarnapur, Bargarh, Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur. The intensity and spread of rainfall will depend on the system’s movement and development.
On October 29, rainfall and strong winds may continue in parts of northern interior and western Odisha.
Cyclone Track and Intensity Under Watch
The system developed from a low-pressure area over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. It is expected to intensify further as it moves west-northwestwards towards the coast.
Although the forecast cited in the report places the likely landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast, Odisha could still experience significant rainfall and strong winds. The exact track, intensity and local impact remain subject to updated meteorological forecasts.
Residents in potentially affected areas should monitor official IMD bulletins and district administration advisories, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, and follow instructions from local authorities. Fishermen should follow official sea-condition and fishing advisories.
Authorities and residents are urged to remain alert and rely on verified updates as the weather system develops.
