Washington: US President Donald Trump has suffered a major political setback in the 2026 midterm elections, with the Democratic Party making significant gains across the country and securing control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The results have delivered a strong message to the Trump administration midway through his second presidential term.

In a major victory for Indian-American Democrats, Pia Dandiya has won Florida's 22nd Congressional District, defeating Republican candidate Casey Askar. Her victory marks another milestone for the Indian-American community in US politics.

However, Indian-origin Republican leader and Trump's close ally Vivek Ramaswamy suffered a major defeat in the Ohio gubernatorial election. Democratic candidate Amy Acton defeated Ramaswamy, ending nearly two decades of Republican dominance in the governor's office.

Acton has also made history by becoming the first woman elected governor of Ohio. The result is particularly significant as Ohio is the home state of US Vice President JD Vance.

The Democratic victory in Ohio is being viewed as a major blow to Trump's political influence. Despite Trump's endorsement and strong campaign support, Ramaswamy could not secure victory.

The midterm elections were held to decide all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 of the 100 Senate seats and several gubernatorial positions across the country.

The Democrats' takeover of both chambers could significantly limit Trump's ability to push through his legislative agenda during the remaining two years of his presidency.

Several key issues, including the Iran war, immigration policies, rising living costs and tariffs imposed on other countries, have become major challenges for the Republican Party.

The election results are also expected to influence America's political direction ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

The big question now is whether Trump's administration can regain public confidence or whether the Democratic victory signals a broader shift in American politics.
