In a major relief for the Tamil film industry ahead of Diwali, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has permitted theatres across the state to screen up to six shows per day for one week from the release date of new Tamil films.
According to the government order, theatres can conduct screenings between 6 AM and 2:30 AM the following day.
The decision comes following requests from the Tamil Film Producers Council, the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association and the Tamil Nadu Multiplex Owners Association.
As per Rule 14-A of the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, theatres are generally permitted to screen four shows per day.
However, during major festival seasons such as Pongal and Deepavali, the government can grant special permission for additional screenings.
Considering the industry's request, the Chief Minister has now approved six shows per day for one week from the release date of new Tamil films, according to an official government press release.
The decision is expected to benefit film producers and theatre owners while giving moviegoers more opportunities to watch new releases during the festive season.
The move is particularly significant for Tamil cinema's Diwali releases, with the extended screening schedule expected to provide a boost to theatrical business.
