Brasília: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has secured a historic victory in the presidential runoff, defeating Senator Flávio Bolsonaro to win an unprecedented fourth presidential term. The result marks a dramatic comeback for Lula, who trailed his rival in the first round of voting held on October 4.

According to official election results, Lula secured approximately 51.7% of the valid votes, compared with around 48.3% for Flávio Bolsonaro. The victory makes Lula the first candidate since Brazil’s return to democracy to finish second in the first round and go on to win the presidential runoff.

Lula Overcomes First-Round Defeat

In the first round, Flávio Bolsonaro finished ahead of Lula by approximately 2.2 million votes. Following the setback, Lula’s campaign intensified its outreach to young voters and undecided supporters through rallies, public meetings and a stronger social media presence.

The campaign push helped Lula reverse the result in the second round, securing a narrow but decisive victory in one of Brazil’s most closely watched presidential contests.

Brazil’s Political Direction in Focus

The election highlighted deep political divisions in Latin America’s largest economy. Lula’s victory ensures continuity of the left-wing Workers’ Party government, while Flávio Bolsonaro had campaigned on a conservative platform and sought to build on the political support associated with his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro.

The result is also being closely watched internationally because of Brazil’s economic influence and its relationship with the United States under President Donald Trump.

Lula’s fourth term will begin after his inauguration in January 2027. His victory marks a significant moment in Brazil’s modern democratic history.
