Daniil Medvedev showcased his fighting spirit and championship pedigree by successfully defending his Almaty Open title, defeating Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-3 in a thrilling final on Sunday.
The Russian star bounced back after narrowly losing the opening set in a tie-break, dominating the second set before maintaining his momentum to seal the victory in one hour and 53 minutes.
The triumph marked a major milestone in Medvedev’s career, as he successfully defended a tour-level title for the first time. It was also his 25th ATP Tour title and fourth trophy of the 2026 season, following his earlier successes in Brisbane, Dubai and Chengdu.
Medvedev’s impressive campaign in Almaty included victories over Sho Shimabukuro and Terence Atmane, while he advanced to the final after Alexander Bublik retired during their semi-final.
The victory further strengthened Medvedev’s position in the ATP Live Race to Turin, boosting his hopes of qualifying for the prestigious Nitto ATP Finals. The former World No. 1 will now turn his attention to the Vienna Open, aiming to continue his strong run of form.
Despite the defeat, Basilashvili enjoyed an encouraging week in Kazakhstan. The Georgian qualifier reached his first ATP Tour final since 2022 and is projected to return to the ATP Top 100.
Medvedev’s successful title defence underlines his strong form in 2026 as he continues his push for a place among the season’s elite at the ATP Finals.
