New Delhi: Former India captain Virat Kohli’s unforgettable run-chasing heroics remain a defining chapter in T20 cricket. Now, young Indian batter Tilak Varma is building a reputation of his own, showing remarkable composure and maturity when the pressure is at its highest.
Tilak once again demonstrated his finishing ability on Saturday, October 24, guiding India to a thrilling four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second T20 International at Christchurch. Chasing a target of 181, India recovered from a precarious position to seal the win with one ball remaining, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
Tilak and Nitish Reddy Rescue India
India’s chase appeared to be slipping away after the team lost several key wickets. At one stage, the visitors were struggling at 112/6 in 14.5 overs, with 69 runs still required from 31 balls.
Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy then produced a remarkable comeback, stitching together an unbeaten 69-run partnership for the seventh wicket off just 30 balls.
Tilak remained unbeaten on 51 off 26 deliveries, striking six boundaries and a six. Nitish provided valuable support with an unbeaten 26 off 13 balls, including a four and a six.
Their partnership turned a difficult chase into a memorable victory and highlighted the importance of composure, smart strike rotation and timely attacking shots in T20 cricket.
Naman Dhir Provides Crucial Momentum
Before the decisive partnership, Naman Dhir had helped India stay in contention with a quickfire 31 off 17 balls, including one four and three sixes.
However, his dismissal increased the pressure on Tilak and Nitish. The pair responded by rotating the strike against the spinners and targeting scoring opportunities against the pace bowlers in the closing overs.
India eventually crossed the finish line at 181/6 in 19.5 overs, with Tilak being named Player of the Match.
‘The Whole of India Believes in You’
After the match, Tilak credited head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak for giving him the confidence to finish the chase.
He said the coaches had reminded him that the entire country believed in him and that India could win if he stayed at the crease until the end.
Tilak also explained that he and Naman Dhir had planned to score quickly against the spinners. After Dhir’s dismissal, he and Nitish focused on rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries.
Tilak said the pair’s plan worked, although he felt India might have finished the chase earlier had Dhir remained at the crease.
Following in Virat Kohli’s Footsteps
Virat Kohli’s historic unbeaten 82 against Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup at Melbourne remains one of the most celebrated run chases in cricket history.
Tilak Varma is now creating his own identity as a dependable batter in pressure situations. His unbeaten 69 against Pakistan in the 2025 Asia Cup final was another example of his ability to guide India through a tense chase.
With his latest performance against New Zealand, Tilak has further strengthened his reputation as a middle-order batter capable of staying calm when wickets fall and the required run rate climbs.
India’s 2-0 advantage in the series reflects the team’s strong start, while Tilak’s growing confidence offers another encouraging sign ahead of the remaining matches.
For Indian cricket fans, the emergence of a young batter who can take responsibility in difficult situations adds another compelling chapter to the country’s rich tradition of match-winning T20 performances.
