New Delhi: Former India captain MS Dhoni has offered a fresh hint about his Indian Premier League (IPL) future, saying he will assess his fitness and decide before December whether he can play another season.
Dhoni made the remarks while attending a healthcare event in Bengaluru. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) veteran missed the entire IPL 2026 season due to fitness concerns, particularly calf-related issues.
When asked whether he wanted to return for another IPL season, Dhoni responded humorously, saying he would first undergo medical tests before deciding whether his body could handle another demanding campaign.
“Before December, I will have to see… how strong I am to maybe play one more season,” Dhoni said.
He also joked that the responsibility rested with the doctors, describing himself as an “old vintage vehicle” that would need to be kept in good running condition.
Dhoni’s Fitness to Determine IPL Return
The 45-year-old’s participation in IPL 2027 remains uncertain, with his fitness expected to play a crucial role in the final decision. Dhoni has not confirmed his return or announced his retirement.
One of the most successful players in IPL history, Dhoni has scored 5,439 runs in 278 matches, including 24 half-centuries. As CSK captain, he led the franchise to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies.
CSK Look to Bounce Back
CSK have endured difficult seasons recently, finishing last in IPL 2025 and eighth in IPL 2026. The franchise will be looking to rebuild and return to playoff contention in the upcoming season.
Dhoni’s decision will be closely watched by CSK supporters, who are hoping to see the legendary wicketkeeper-batter return to the field. For now, the former India captain has made it clear that his fitness assessment will determine whether he can extend his IPL career by another season.
