New Delhi: A series of helicopter accidents in the mountainous regions of Uttarakhand has once again raised serious concerns over aviation safety, particularly during the Char Dham Yatra.
Following the recent helicopter crash in Chamoli, the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has taken up the issue, writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and calling for urgent reforms in helicopter safety regulations.
In its letter, the pilots' body highlighted the challenges of operating helicopters in mountainous regions, where rapidly changing weather conditions, poor visibility and difficult geographical terrain can significantly increase flight risks.
The organisation said helicopter operations in states like Uttarakhand require special safety measures, as sudden changes in weather can create dangerous situations for pilots during flights.
The FIP has stressed that repeated helicopter accidents should not simply be dismissed as isolated incidents. Instead, it has called for a comprehensive review of helicopter operations, pilot training, weather forecasting systems and existing safety arrangements.
The organisation has also sought an appointment with Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu to discuss the matter.
One of the key demands raised by the FIP is a review of helicopter services operating during the Char Dham Yatra. The organisation has suggested that helicopter operations in mountainous areas should be regulated and restricted based on operational requirements, weather conditions and safety considerations.
Every year, thousands of pilgrims use helicopter services to reach religious destinations, including Kedarnath, during the Char Dham Yatra. Against this backdrop, the pilots' body has emphasised that passenger safety must remain the top priority.
The FIP has also called for the formation of a National Helicopter Safety Review Committee under the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
The proposed committee would examine helicopter accidents across the country, review existing safety standards and identify gaps in operational procedures.
The pilots' organisation has suggested that the committee submit its review and recommendations within 90 days.
According to the FIP, a national-level review mechanism could help identify the reasons behind repeated accidents and strengthen helicopter safety arrangements across the country.
